Sekirei ep 1

Ok, when I say “Sekirei - worth watching just for references” I meant that this show will remind you of many, many others, which is to say that it’s derivative to the extreme.

Vaganbond VS Musashi

I’m a bit of a Inoue Takehiko fan. A bit since I like his drawing style, “REAL” is one of my favorite manga, but “Chameleon Jail” not so much. I also like Eiji Yoshikawa’s book (this link contains some spoilers; check Amazon for info without spoilers) though it lacks subtlety and it borders at times on flowery, at least in the translation I read, and I rec it to people who like history, samurai, Musashi, even Zen. I also rec (and even provide a handy link to random translations I found ^^) Musashi’s Go Rin No Sho translated by Victor Harris, complete with notes and Sun Tzu’s Art of War with annotations that Wikipedia considers dated and a link to the annotations-free version.

All right, Go Rin No Sho obviously has a connection with this post, but what about Sun Tzu? Well, Sun Tzu’s Art of War is in fact mentioned in “Musashi”, though the scene was changed beyond recongnition in “Vagabond” (see bellow, no 3).

The post(s) will be about the differences between the book and manga. Some things have to be said first. One, while this is an anime/manga blog, and I do like Inoue Takehiko, I am not partial to some of the changes the manga made. Two, I won’t get much into the changes that are either explained by the different medium (no matter how much we talk about “visual novels” a manga is not a book and many details are lost to accomodate the format) or probably due to a need for brevity - at least when the first volumes were written.

Great. Let’s get to it.

New MMORPGs - DOMO Dream of Mirror Online

I’ve been away from t3h Internets for a long time, watching old(er) anime series. And then when I got back online the closed beta invitations started dropping in my inbox. Sweet, but very time consuming. So time consuming that right now I’m only watching anime series that I know to be good based on the manga… i.e. Bamboo Blade, Shion no Ou, and Blue Drop.

PART 1:
DOMO aka Dream of Mirror Online, a Chinese MMORPG with cell shaded graphics and the ambition to promote social interactions. These and the fact that you can practically start over if you are unhappy with your character (change class) without losing the progress you made (you can still use the skills) are some aspects that I think make DOMO appealing for an anime fan, even if s/he is not a MMORPG player.
DOMO has 2 English versions: GameTribe i.e. European version that doesn’t even have a proper site for DOMO yet (US IPs blocked), Closed Beta recently over, and Aeria, still in CB. GameTribe’s Open Beta will probably start earlier, but I’m not going to be on it. The rant about Aeria being preferable is at the end of the post.
UPDATE: Aeria was forced to block (some) Europeans ID.

2 moons Open Beta started.

2 moons is a free MMORPG, released by Acclaim, originally the Korean game Dekaron. Acclaim advertised it as a 17+ game, “totally brutal”, “extreme violence” - the mobs will die in different ways, depending on the damage you inflict - and “heart-pumping action” - read: open PvP.

The open beta started out promising enough (July 30th) with the server working fine by the time I downloaded the game and logged in. There was and still is some lag, but not more so than expected. No complaints here.

I have several complaints, however. (Duh. Why else would I rant here?)

El Cazador rant

This post is all about the “girls with guns” Bee Train trilogy, so it compares El Cazador with Noir and Madlax, but there are no spoilers for those 2 series.

Nanoha Striker S rant

This rant has one and only one purpose: to explain why I dislike StrikerS for reasons that aren’t “26 eps series VS 13 eps series pacing”. It’s easier than to reply in comments again. It’s written quickly as soon as I woke up and saw the comment for the ep 3 post, so I might add to it later on.

Nanoha StrikerS 3 - “Gathering of Useless Characters”

“It took quite awhile for my dream to be realized” is a funny line to use when you show the now adult Nanoha/Fate/Hayate “half naked in bed” threesome. Too bad the rest of script doesn’t keep up.
