The obligatory 2006 list
Is everyone writing these lists?
Here’s mine.
Best of 2006:
….
I plead the 5th on this one.
For one thing, there are too many good series I haven’t watched yet. On the other hand, I’m always biased towards what I’m enjoying now/have enjoyed recently. And thirdly, I just plain suck at this kind of lists.
Worst of 2006:
Now we’re talkin’. XD
This has been the uh, best year for bad anime, since I’ve synchroed most (if not all) subbed crap out there. The challenge in listing the absolute worst is that I have to separate shows we loathe (OtoBoku, Zero no Tsukaima) from absolute crap. Onwards.
In the end I settled for shows that have something that sets them apart from the plethora of lame shit available this year.
* Powerpuff Girls Z deserves special mention as the show that showed animefying a cartoon does not mean improving it. Every anime fanboy that thinks “anime is the l33t art form” should be forced to sample PPGZ.
I don’t mind this being a kiddie show, but I DO mind the total, repeated, brutal rape of the original. The real Powerpuff Girls were created by accident, when Chemical X spilled in the “sugar, spice, and everything nice” mix Professor Utonium had brewing. Before they were Powerpuff Girls they are goo, not children. Professor Utonium is their father. Literally. They have no other family.
These Powerpuff Girlz Z are normal girls that get ZOMFGSuperPowerZ after Professor Utonium’s son (why was a new character needed?) blasts a huge iceberger with some KaMeHaMeHa Ray Turret of Doom or something similar. Cue LONG AND HYPER NUDIE HENSHIN TIMES THREE and mahou shoujo shenigans.
Needless to say, there were other changes too, like Blossom having a crush on a guy, and Buttercap being a skateboarding tomboy that looks like a guy. MojoJojo is a retard. No, they are ALL retards. They also eat candy all the friggin’ time! During the synchro we came to wonder if this isn’t just some longer commercial.
Also the OP is among the worst I have ever heard. That woman should not sing. Ever. Even in the shower.
* Soul Link also deserves special mention as the bad 2006 anime that I’ve actually finished, watched entirely during synchro sessions. Why is it on the list? Worst SF of the year. That’s why. (I’m linking to Northy’s review because I don’t just “agree with it”, it reflects the shared opinions during the synchro. I 100% agree with everything there so why try to say it again, when he already said it so darn well?)
* Lovely Idol: possibly THE worst anime of 2006. Seriously. There are more offensive shows out there, but Lovely Idol is just so incredibly bad it takes the cake. Trying to list all its flaws is something beyond the scope of this list. And probably words alone cannot express how much it sucks. Suffice to say then that it has no, absolutely no redeeming features. Even the character designs are too bland to count.
* Kagihime Monogatari Eikyuu Alice Rinbukyoku deserves special mention as the yuri show I couldn’t watch. Simply put, as a yuri fan, I downloaded it, yet I dropped it after 2 episodes. A sure sign this anime is the among the worst of the worst.
Other anime that I place on this list because I can (i.e. it can be argued that I dropped them too soon, or that I just “don’t get it”, not that I care):
* Inukami!. I’ve only watched an episode, but that was my impression.
* Kirarin Revolution. We’ve synchroed one episode and we were stunned by its inanity, annoying cliches, and horrible voices. Of course, Lovely Idol trumped all those, but this show still sucks. 14-year-old girl whose only interest is food? Check. She falls in love with a guy from an idol group and wants to become an idol herself just to be with him? Check. Cat mascot? Totally. As a bonus, when I first skimmed through it to see if it’s synchro material, her face was deformed in all the scenes I glimpsed. Upon viewing, the representativity of the random samples was confirmed.
* Tactical Roar. Another show that I dropped, despite the (meaningless) yuri. Brainmelting stupidity and lots of fanservice. It gets listed as the worst 2006 action title.
* Naikaku Kenryoku Hanzai Kyosei Torishimarikan Zaizen Jotaro. I’ve added this one later. How could I forget? The first episode was so bad, I was stunned into silence. I’ll write a full post on it.
Waiting for…
* the rest of MariMite
* Nanoha StrikerS
* Bakuretsu Tenshi OVA (?)
* .hack//G.U. Vol 2 (the release date is still unknown)
* Jade Empire - This is really a dream come true. For those who don’t know what it is, it’s a so far Xbox exclusive Action RPG that came out in 2005. Yes, that old! I was stunned and then beyond thrilled when I found out it’s coming out for PC in February 2007. Revamped (not that important) and featuring new content (yay!), and this time with the yuri kiss onscreen (woo hoo!).
Now, speaking of dreams unexpectedly coming true, will I have to wait more for a My-HiME OVA?

I haven’t watched a lot of the listed series but surely nothing can be worse than Lovely Doll. It’s so bad that I am even reluctant to bash it in detail because that would involve thinking about it or even, God forbid, rewatching a bit of it. ;)
