Claymore 3 - Clare in Rome?

Clare gets saddled with another annoying task: infiltrate the Vatican! help lousy humans who don’t want her help (seriously though, The holy city of Rabona = Roma, see if you can tell me otherwise). So she goes undercover. Of course, when you are known as a silver-eyed witch you can’t exactly use a wig and call it a day. As contacts were not invented in this medieval-like world, Clare gets to take pills that supress her Claymore-ness.

El Cazador de la Bruja ep 2

Their oh-so-fortunate travelling south ends with them stranded in the desert. The beginning of the episode is all about Ellis = Aspergers R Us, but she is so darn cute…

El Cazador de la Bruja - classic Bee Train

And here it is, the 3rd series I’ve been expecting this season. The fact that this is a “two girls find each other” Bee Train anime, directed by Koichi Mashimo (who else? lol) with music by Yuki Kajiura and chara design by Yoko Kikuchi (Noir) made it an instant favorite. Main chara seiyuu are Ai Shimizu (Mikoto ^^) and Shizuka Itou (Rei, MariMite; Shouko, Asatte). The only point against this series is that Koichi Mashimo also did Madlax, which was… well, let’s just say I didn’t watch more than one episode, yuri or not. I plan to watch more some day though. (I did mention the yuri, no?)

My first impression of this anime, just 2 minutes in, was that I’ve seen ALL of it before and I was just waiting to see it again. Maybe I am biased though. *pauses* Heck, who cares? It’s been too long since I was this enthusiastic when watching anime.

Claymore ep 1 from a manga fan

Finally, the second show I’ve been waiting for this season! Nanoha was no 1 only because I know for sure, or thought I knew, that it’d make an enjoyable series, while Claymore, awesome as it is as manga, had a not very promising trailer, screaming low budget. I wouldn’t have minded less than perfect animation, really, but what the trailer showed was cheesy shortcuts taken in the action scenes. Those get really old, really fast, and are a mood-breaker. Well… the first episode is not quite trailer bad.

The beginning is very gory and shot all in red and black, but the music is a classical piece, on the serene side, which offsets the visuals quite nicely.

Nanoha StrikerS ep 1

The previews and the OP and ED were the best part, unfortunately. Plus, the file was too LQ, so I didn’t bother with screencaps.

I like the opening theme less than the first 2, but the montage is awesome. I hope As popularity didn’t turn this into a purely action series though.

The beginning is very good, nice voice, memories, drama and Nanoha showing how versatile she’s become (a spell that holds a statue from squashing Yuri Subtext team no 4, more verbal feedback from Raising Heart - Engrish never dies - and general undescribable coolness). The music playing during this scene is the “definitely on speed version” of the usual Nanoha music.

Of course, Nanoha blasts the roof over their heads with Diiiiivine Buster!!!!. One note to the seiyuu: Nanoha’s new voice is great, but this part sounds like a reused sound file from the first series.

Subaru is impressed with Nanoha’s strenth, coolness and warm hands. Cut to 4 years later. The loli has become a kickboxer on rollerblades, is wearing skimpy clothing, and has aquired a hot, a tad Nanoha-looking partner. Unfortunately her voice is higher and whinier than when she was a wimp ready to die in a fire. The partner is carrying guns. I’m curious how this will work out in the “magic attacks meets melee combat” world. Well, not really, my main curiosity is “where is Fate already?”.

The answer comes soon enough: Fate is in a freakin’ helicopter! Wtf is wrong with flying? And she tells Hayate it’s dangerous to leave the door open all the way (to, you know, watch the whole scene live). Excuse me, can we have old Fate back? She could fly over the buildings holding Nanoha, like she did so often in the past.

Cue cool looking Action Scene. The n00bs destroy targets in a rank exam. It looks good, but I’m still not convinced Subaru’s glove and Teana’s gun work that well in an actual fight. Especially the gun. The duels always got to melee weapon vs weapon. Or are they meant to fight as a pair all the time?
Even so, some parts of the fight felt more like Hollywood action movies, with Teana firing from cover. What about an area attack? They only did something of a kind as a combo. I guess the B rank is too low for the kind of stuff we’ve seen in the first 2 series.

I’ll keep watching this because I am such a fan of the first 2 series, but heck, the episode was disappointing. I’ve really waited for StrikerS, but because I wanted to see the old characters, not new ones. I don’t care about Subaru and Teana, they were introduced too abruptly, they took over the screen like they were main characters.

The previews are the best part, showing Fate in action and the trio (N, F, H) in bed. (Like… huh?) They still didn’t show Arf though. Where is Arf?

ICE trailer and the shoujo ai friendship

As this is a pretty busy time for me and no series got my attention in a long while, I was thrilled to see the trailer for ICE an OVA listed as “shoujo ai” on anidb. The thing is… I was less than thrilled with it after seeing the trailer.

Basically there are only women around. Men are dead. This sounds pretty yuri-ish, doesn’t it? Of course it does. And then what do I read in the way too quickly vanishing text? “their new friendship will be pitted against the gears of conflict”. Well, I said, you can’t just say “and they will have HLS while the bombs are fallin’.” But then… “In the world which was destroyed as well as completed by love and desire, the way to salvation is friendship.” Am I seeing a trend here? Moreover, one of the characters is “dependant upon a special body for those who were once dead.” Ok, HLS is not looking very well right now…

Well, there is always Claymore. And sooner. ICE only airs in May.

Venus versus Virus episode 1

Based on a manga by Atsushi Suzumi. The first chapter was action-filled and had the classic cool, mysterious, monster fighting, patch-wearing girl (goth loli Lucia) meets ordinary girl with a minor power (Sumire). There were some subtext vibes already, and the cover had them lying together, looking awesome. Needless to say, I was really eager to see the first episode of this new show. (Anime News Network recaps the chapter here, as plot summary for the series.)

Now for the anime…

[RO] Afro Samurai episodul 1

Clar! Tre’ sa fie mama lui, nu? Dar…stupoare. E un copil, e fiul lui. Inteleg atunci. *Scrie in agenda: “De mers la control sa imi fac ochelari.”*
